Lani Krantz was born in Alberta into a family of musicians where, at an early age, she began exploring a number of instruments and musical styles. In 1988 Lani began her harp studies in the studio of Mrs. Taka Kling in Victoria, BC. Lani was actively involved as a flutist in high school and in choral and vocal jazz groups. She studied voice privately with Sung Ha Shin Bovey and was accepted to the British Columbia Honour Choir. Lani has completed six years of Post Secondary studies in harp performance, studying privately with Vancouver Symphony’s Principal harpist, Elizabeth Volpe. She studied early vocal music with the UBC Collegium Musicum under the direction of Ramona Leungen and contemporary music with the UBC Contemporary Ensemble under the direction of Professor Steven Chapman. |

Lani has worked with many different instrumentalists in chamber settings. She won first prize in the West Coast Music Festival’s Senior Ensemble with violist Martina Smazaal and flutist Carol Dymond. Lani has also premiered a number of works by Canadian composers including the performances of composer Timothy Pickett’s solo harp works “Printemps” and “Danza d’Estate” which were dedicated to Lani. Lani has played with a number of choral and opera ensembles such as Opera Appassionata, Pandora’s Vox and Espiritus. Lani plays with a number of orchestras in Greater Vancouver and surrounding areas. Lani works as principal harp on-call with the Vancouver Island Symphony, the Prince George Symphony and has been engaged as second harpist with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra since 2006. As part of her orchestral training, Lani was accepted to study at the Aspen Music Festival and won the position of Principal Harp with Canada’s National Youth Orchestra for their 2001 concert tour. Lani has performed for many shows and with touring artists such as, Josh Groban, Paul Potts and Natalie Chouquette. Lani’s solo playing encompasses many musical styles. She has given many recitals in traditional classical style as well as those using multi-media; incorporating visual arts, music and song, and dance and theatrics. Lani’s solo studies have also included master-classes and private lessons with some of North America’s most celebrated harpists: Judy Loman, Rita Costanzi and Nancy Allen. | |
